Random finds

I'm always losing earring! sad, yes because I absolutely love earrings! For the past few months, I'd been looking for a solution to this in the form of an earring holder. But, alas! I had not been able to find one (only was able to find necklace holders at Ross, Bealls Outlet and the like) and was googling "how to make your own earring holder" (and praying it didn't turn out tacky). While I was at Walmart to pick up supplies to make my own tacky earring holder, out of desperation I asked two Walmart employees completely engrossed in their conversation and ignoring me despite the "How can I help you?" badges they BOTH worn. With a bit of an annoyed look, one lady pointed me in the direction of the jewelry department and said "on the bottom shelf." I and my roomie raced over to the jewelry department and AHHHHH!- the solution to my earring trials!!

hope this helps someone! :) it was 10 dollars at Walmart :) until next time...

Time flies when you're having fun :)

Wow! It's been almost two weeks since I posted on here! Just to recap the past two weeks: I finished my second semester of med school well and with good grades :) happy with my performance, but I regret pushing myself to the fullest this semester..it was alot of catch-up because I ALWAYS struggle to perform well on the first test! I WILL get a running start to next semester. :) Over the past two weeks, I've gotten a baby..well not literally, but it certainly feels like it! My puppy Ava is only 11 weeks old and definitely a handful; for all of you THINKING about getting pregnant, get a puppy first! lol I think if the teen girls making a choice to get pregnant (think a few years ago with the girls in the news for the "pregnancy pact") or having sex casually because "a baby won't happen to them" would get a puppy first (a lot of work), the rates of pregnancy would see a dramatic decline...I'm just saying lol Even now, Ava is curled up on my lap as I use my laptop to type this post! Her new thing is also sitting on top of my laptop whether it's open or not lol
So far, I've spent the break taking care of my hair, doing friends' hair, renting movies from redbox, reading novels, listening to Pandora (setting the station to Maroon 5 gives me a good mix), going to local dog parks with Ava, going to the shooting range, taking a class for a concealed weapons permit (go NRA!), and texting/skyping. :)

I'm trying to keep my hands out of my hair and keep pretty low-maintenance styles throughout the break. I've been co-washing my hair with Yes to Tomatoes conditioner (YTT) every few days when I feel the need to run my hands through my curls (still waiting on someone special to do that for me ;). I have other conditioners that I keep in rotation, but I'm trying to use up the YTT; because it's an organic-y, natural ingredients line, it actually has a pretty quick expiration date by the time I get it from Ross (it's $3 there, and $12 at Target) so I have to use it up quickly. Currently, I've been rocking beanies with a flat-twist in the front...I got the idea from AJ of http://www.ajwitafro.com/. Here's the specific post: http://ajwitafro.com/beanie-flat-twist/.  I also helped a friend do a straw-set on her transitioning hair a few Sundays ago, and did Bantu-knots on another newly-natural friend's TWA a few days ago...how many days ago? idk, I'm on break and the days are starting to run together lol

I also have been renting movie's from redbox...STC2 was decent (yes, I know I'm incredibly late) though not as good as the first. Letters to Juliet was soo good!! go check that one out :) I'm watching "Easy A" with my roomie tonight, so I'll post on how that is ;)

Ohh another thing!! I follow Alexandra Smith's awesome blog (http://healthyghb.blogspot.com/)- she is an entreprenuer of natural hair care products among other things and I had been wanting to try her "Curl Clouds" product ever since seeing posts on it one her blog and reading a review of it on another natural hair blog (http://www.hair2toebeauty.com/). So I ordered some when I saw on twitter that she had made some more! I'm glad I got some because it was sold-out in less than a day! lol Alex said she'd be making a new batch, so if you want to try some, here's her store SafiHairCare to order some from :)

I've also been taking Ava to dog parks. The one we go to has a pen for large dogs and small dogs- I generally put her small self (she's only about 10 pounds at 11 weeks) in the large dog area because I want her to socialize well and "toughen" her up. This little puppy is hilarious! She puts up with the other larger dogs sniffing her and sometimes knocking her over for a little while, but then she starts defending herself and the large dogs back off! lol Ava thinks she runs the show at the dog park, and to a certain extent, she does. I generally try to watch the expressions of other dogs and their owners to know if the other dog Ava is playing with is too aggressive, if the owner is even paying attention, and if the owner is annoyed by Ava's actions. Yes, even dog parks have unspoken "rules" that most considerate dog owners abide by. If your dog is too rowdy or aggressive, PLEASE do us all a favor and either take the time to calm it down or leave! This isnt the time to be making business calls or sitting in a corner texting while your aggressive dog reached for my dog's neck! (Yes, there was a man doing exactly that in the dog park today!) Come on people, a little respect for others goes a long way. All the dogs and their owners want to enjoy the park. That is all.

Also, I took a class to get my concealed weapons permit; while there's not an imminent NEED for a gun now, I'm choosing to protect myself as a single woman weighing 122 pounds and standing at only 5'1". I really can't explain it better than Allen, a friend who teaches a concealed weapons permit class. Even if you don't have a gun now, I strongly recommend you take a concealed weapons permit class to know how to shoot accurately, know the gun laws, and be a well-informed citizen. Below is an excerpt from his site:

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.
I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I  don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.
I  don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.
  I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun  because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.
  I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and
not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.
  I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron.  Free citizens must protect themselves.

Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Laughs that got me through the day

youforgotblueberries.com

I cry laughing every time LOL

My addiction

Publix is my main stop for produce... you know, veggies and fruits :) Everyone knows you DON'T get fruit or veggies (really anything perishable) from Walmart. If you STILL are, STOP IT! Go to Publix. :) Another great thing Publix has going for them is their Buy One, Get Ones (frequently really good on cereals) and their 10 for $10. I found my new addiction through their 10 for $10 sale! Sobe LifeWaters are the bizness! I'm not a dieter or obsessive about my weight, but I generally try to stay away from extra calories in sugary drinks. Look at the labels! You'd be amazed how many calories are in your favorite juices and sodas. Oh, there's only 50 calories in it??? -________________- yeah, that's probably PER serving... and you're probably going to drink the whole bottle which has 50 servings which translates into 2500 calories. (Okay maybe that's a little exaggeration, but you get the point lol ). I like Sobe LifeWaters (no, they're not paying me anything) because there's 0 Calories for the whole drink. Plus, the drink's loaded with vitamins and some herbal content. There's alot of flavors too so you don't get bored with a limited selection.

An added bonus is the cool lizard that Sobe has branded lol Here's one of their Manhattan billboards.

Some of my favorite flavors are strawberry dragonfruit, yumberry pomegranate, fuji apple pear, and mango melon.  Try it and let me know what you think. Until next time...:)

Freezing in FL

Yes, I live in FL. Wearing a fur-lined parka. It's 35 degrees outside. That is all. :/

From Thanksgiving Break

Just wanted to give a belated look at my Thanksgiving break! I went home and hung out with fam and friends...the two things I'm honestly most thankful for. We had a good time!! My dad took my brother, Alicia (a friend from school) and Alicia's dad to a Black Mouth Cur breeder and to the shooting range. The puppies were so cute! The female I'm holding is the one I'm picking up on Monday :) So excited! I need to come up with a Christmas outfit for the puppy...any ideas??? :)
Me and Ava, a female Black Mouth Cur from Magnolia Kennel @ 7weeks
I like this picture :) My Dad and the back of my head...it's good to actually be able to see how the back of your head looks from time to time...This was two-strand twists done on natural hair and then gathered into a French braid in the back and a small pompadour in the front.

Waiting to shoot at Styx Shooting Range, take 1 (Alicia and I)

Take 2

 Until next time.... ;)

Laughs that got me through the day

1. Best Trey Songz Impersonation - I like some of Trey Songz stuff but let's admit it- alot of new R&B sounds the same and his voice is straight annoying lol
2. Nephew Tommy Stuttering Prank - DO NOT click if you think you MIGHT  be offended!! For those of you that don't know Nephew Tommy is a radio personality on The Steve Harvey Morning Show that prank calls unassuming people at the request of their family/friends/coworkers. Hilarious!!! lol

Yes, I'm a foodie :)

Today was one of the last grueling days at school for the semester!! I got up at 0645 to finish prepping for the Doctoring (ugh, kinda like an ethics/useless information course- the 2nd years say it gets better though :), Neuroanatomy, and Microanatomy courses ...I feel pretty confident on some components and not so good on others. While I lament some questions, I'm not going to DWELL on it--what will be, will be. When I struggle with school (most of the time it's because of doing too much outside of school *sheepish grin*), I just have to remind myself of my reaction when I got into this FL med school...a rush of calls to my family, pastor, and church family, as well as many tears and "congrats." I wouldn't have gotten in if God didn't want me to be in med school, 1 Corinthians 10:13 basically says God won't put more on you than you can take. So even if I think it's too tough at times, and a professor has something wrong with him to give too much detail/talk over his allotted time/or expects too much of the lowly first-years, I can handle it because I'm SUPPOSED TO BE preparing to be a doctor. I'll be referring back to this post in future semesters :)

So what I actually got on to share (not literally) was my reward to myself for making it through today ....y'all check it out :) I LOVE THE PUBLIX BAKERY!!! Red velvet cake...and now y'all going out to get some because you can't have any of miiiiinnnnnneeee!! ;) until next time...

My Music

"I Can't Lie" by Maroon 5 is killing my eardrums... right about...NOW lol I'm one of those people that have to have music insanely loud to "feel" it :) I love their bright, neo-soulish sound, it makes any song they do sound happy overall even if it's talking about missing that special someone...You all should check it out, it's on their album "Hands All Over." I want to include a promo picture of their album, group, etc.. but a little unsure about how copyrights go...so I'll trust you all to Google it :) until next time...

The first post! :)

Hey everyone! Welcome to my blog "Nerdy Naturally." I chose this name because I'm a first year medical student and am natural...That's pretty much it. I subscribe to alot of natural hair blogs and find that they have a wealth of information, but I wanted to do my own thing I guess. I mean, why NOT put some information out there. A few things you should know about me...
1) I'm stubborn but also try to listen to other people's opinions, so feel free to comment!

2) I think of myself as a fit person. I generally watch what I eat and take Pilates classes when I can fit it in my schedule as far as school is concerned.

3) I'm super-excited about getting a dog! I am getting a Black Mouth Cur puppy here in the next week and a half, so we'll see how that goes. Her name is Ava and she is about 9 weeks and just adorable!!

4)I am a natural girl and my hands are constantly in my hair lol I went natural January 25, 2010 and I love trying out new things with my hair. It's funny, if your would have told me 2 years ago I'd be wearing twists, bantu knots, and other natural staples, I'd have been like, "yeah, ok." I always thought of myself as a confident person even when I was relaxed, but I think being natural has definitely forced even more confidence out of me. I'm not a Nazi and don't believe going natural is for everyone. DO YO' THANG!! not mine, or anyone else's! lol

5) I've become quite a moody person over the last two years I think. When I was younger, about 5 with chipmunk cheeks and ashy knees, my mom said she thought I was going to be in drama or theater because of my overt friendliness. While I still think I'm generally a friendly person, I tend to observe more now before I "leap" into any friendship. I can't stand messy people and drama and have been burned by both...kinda makes people get misconceptions about me firsthands. I LOVE the people that I am friends with at school now, but when I first met everyone, they thought I was one of "those black girls"...ya know, the kind that is soo freakin intent on NOT being a stereotype that she only associates with white people and won't associate with black people??! lol I also got "stuckup," "bouji" (?sp), and "quiet." No, I will not eagerly jump into a friendship or relationship of any kind without observing how people interact with others; it's like jumping into a dark pond headfirst and finding out too late it's only 3 feet deep...DANGEROUS!! I like to get an idea of WHO people are before I find myself in too deep and finding out the association is incompatible...ok , that's enough of my soapbox.

6) oh, one last thing! my nephew is adorable!! look at that face!

Well, I'm kinda tired and running out of things to say so I guess I'll just log off :) until next time...
